The 14th Shamarpa

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche (1952-2014)

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche (1952–2014) was the 14th incarnation of the great lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu tradition, renowned as the Red Hat Karmapa. The line of Shamar Rinpoches dates back to the 13th century and is regarded as inseparable from that of the Karmapas themselves, sharing in their enlightened activity for the benefit of all beings.

Recognised at an early age by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, Rinpoche received the complete transmissions of the Kagyu teachings and was trained under his direct guidance at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim. Following the passing of the 16th Karmapa, Shamar Rinpoche became the principal lineage holder responsible for maintaining and transmitting the authentic teachings of the Karma Kagyu school.

Throughout his life, Rinpoche worked tirelessly to preserve the integrity of the lineage and to make the Dharma accessible to students around the world. He established many centres for study and meditation in Asia, Europe and the Americas, and founded the Shar Minub Institute in Nepal as a place for advanced monastic and lay training.

A highly accomplished scholar and meditation master, Shamar Rinpoche combined deep learning with practical wisdom and compassion. His books, such as A Golden Swan in Turbulent Waters, continue to illuminate the true meaning of the Buddha’s teachings and inspire practitioners globally.
