Meditation: Introductory LevelOne begins the Buddhist path by training in the calm-abiding or ‘shamatha’ meditation, combined with guidance in the fundamental teachings of the Buddha, given in Dechen’s weekly introductory classes hosted at our network of centres and groups. These classes enable students to develop an effective daily meditation practice at home, which will lead to the development of calmness and stability in one's practise and everyday life. This training will usually be supplemented by reading introductory books such as The Way of Tibetan Buddhism. The introductory classes last about one hour, comprising some background explanation by the instructor and guidance in the practice instructions. Everyone is welcome and no prior knowledge of Buddhism or meditation is required. Meditation is done sitting on a cushion, so loose, comfortable clothing is best. For those who wish to deepen their understanding and practice, some of the teaching events in the annual programme of Lama Jampa Thaye will be very useful for practitioners at this stage, such as those in which an overview of the Buddhist path is given, or which elaborate on the fundamental teachings of Buddha in detail. Information on these is available on the events section of this website and at the introductory classes. Those who wish to fully enter the Buddhist path may do so by requesting the short ceremony of ‘taking refuge’, in which one becomes a Buddhist. Subsequently, they can begin training in the more profound meditations and teachings of the Buddha. The practice known as ‘sending and taking’ is usually undertaken at this stage, which in time may lead to one taking the ‘Bodhisattva vow’. |
