MeditationMeditation
The practice of meditation enables us to overcome the disturbing emotions that arise in the mind. Anger, desire and unawareness continually arise in an unsettled mind, disrupting the possibility of peaceful, contented and joyful life. Through meditation, one can develop calm-abiding (Sanskrit: shamatha): a stable, clear and peaceful state of mind where disturbing emotions are pacified. Dechen provides weekly introductory classes where calm-abiding meditation is taught by an instructor, who will guide the class through the various aspects of the practice. By supplementing the classes with regular sessions at home, one can develop calmness and stability in one's life and progress along the spiritual path. Practising the initial steps of meditation is supplemented with guidance in the fundamental teachings of the Buddha, including topics such as impermanence, compassion and insight. The twin elements of understanding and meditation will together produce real clarity and certainty about the Buddhist path. Subsequently, one can receive instructions on the more advanced teachings and practices of the Kagyu and Sakya traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. In all, three major phases of training can be identified: the Introductory, General and Special Levels. |
