Phowa Transmission and Teachings

Phowa (transference) is the transference of consciousness from delusion to realisation. At the time of death, when mind becomes more powerful and pliable, by practising phowa one can attain realisation even if one has not done so in life. Mastery of phowa enables one at death to avoid the bardo, or intermediate state leading to rebirth.

In this two-day course Lama Jampa Thaye will transmit the system of phowa according to Karma Chakme, the renowned 17th century Kagyu master, which is based on the Sky Dharma Transference (Namchö Phowa) received by the treasure-revealer Mingyur Dorje. The course will begin with the initiation of Amitabha and continue with an explanation of the history, benefits and methods of accomplishing the yoga of phowa. This will be the first time that Lama Jampa has given this particular presentation.

This system of phowa is to be practised in conjunction with the meditation on Amitabha from the same Sky Dharma set of treasure teachings revealed by Mingyur Dorje. This meditation is performed at Kagyu Ling on the full moon day of each month. To practise phowa, one must have completed the Vajrayana preliminary practices (ngön-dro) and received Amitabha empowerment and then completed 100,000 recitations of the mantra of Amitabha.

This initiation and teaching is open only to vajrayana practitioners.
