The centre exists to facilitate study and practice of the teachings of the Karma Kagyu tradition, a lineage of Tibetan Buddhism whose spiritual head is the Karmapa lama, incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion, Chenrezik. Situated in Chorlton in South Manchester, Kagyu Ling comprises a traditional shrine room as well as a refreshments area, dharma shop and office, all within a detached house. Please note that, due to renovation work, there will be no classes on 16th, 23rd & 30th April, 7th &14th May. Classes will resume on 21st May. There will be an opportunity for a brief introduction for newcomers which is followed by a talk on a particular aspect of the Buddhist path and includes some meditation. Tea and biscuits are provided and all are welcome. Facility fee £3 Each year there are a number of retreat days where people can get more in-depth experience of Buddhist study and practice. Kagyu Ling also regularly invites Lama Jampa Thaye to bestow teachings from the Karma Kagyu tradition. See the events page for details of these teachings. As a fully functioning Buddhist Centre, Kagyu Ling hosts a regular programme of prayers. This comprises weekly recitation of prayers to Chenrezik, the Buddha of compassion, as well as special prayers and offerings on holy days such as the Four Buddhist Festivals and the days sacred to Arya Tara, Medicine Buddha, Amitabha and Guru Padmasambhava. Kagyu Ling also hosts study groups for the more scholarly aspects of the Buddhist path, has a Tibetan language group and also the Thinley Society, a monthly event for children to learn about dharma. HistoryThrough its connection with Karma Thinley Rinpoche and Lama Jampa Thaye, Kagyu Ling has been fortunate enough to receive some of the most distinguished Tibetan lamas of recent times, including H.H. the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpa'i Dorje, H.H. Sakya Trizin, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, Khamtrul Rinpoche, Ato Rinpoche, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Situ Rinpoche, Gyaltsap Rinpoche, Thrangu Rinpoche, Gendun Rinpoche, Orgyen Tulku and Bokar Rinpoche. Mikyo Dorje ShedraKagyu Ling hosts the Mikyo Dorje Shedra, or college of studies, at which Lama Jampa Thaye bestows extensive textual teachings such as Gampopa's Jewel Ornament of Liberation, Maitreya’s Uttaratantra Shastra and the works of the Karmapas. Spanning several days each new year, this offers a rare opportunity in the UK to receive the major texts of the Karma Kagyu tradition. The Lama provides detailed explanations of the root texts, making use of commentaries composed by later masters of the tradition. |
