The shrine at Dechen DzongKagyu Dechen Dzong

Kagyu Dechen Dzong was established by Lama Jampa Thaye in the early 1990s following his visits to Yorkshire at the request of his students living in the area. A programme of activities by the group was established which included the hosting of several major teachings and public talks in Harrogate by Lama Jampa. The Centre is administered by the Kagyu Dechen Trust, registered charity no. 1064198.

More about the Centre

In 2003, the group acquired a property in central Harrogate which now allowed an expanded programme of regular group practice in the new shrine room and weekly introductory talks for the public. Kagyu Dechen Dzong regularly invites Lama Jampa Thaye to Yorkshire to give teachings from the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

The centre is attended by Lama Jampa's students from all over Yorkshire, including Bradford, Leeds, York and Hull as well as from Harrogate itself. It is run by volunteers and funded by donations. Please contact the Centre if you would like to help by making a regular contribution.

The Dechen Dzong sangha carry out a regular programme of prayers and group practice. This comprises weekly recitation of prayers to Chenrezik, the Buddha of compassion, as well as special prayers and offerings on holy days such as the Four Buddhist Festivals days, and the days sacred to Arya Tara, Sangye Menla, Amitabha, and Guru Padmasambhava.

Study groups which review the Buddhist texts taught during the course of the Dechen annual teaching programme, form another part of the centre’s activity, as do Meditation Days which are organised several times a year to give the opportunity for more intensive group sessions of meditation.

Children’s activities with a dharma theme are organised on a regular basis by the Thinley Society group.
